Finance Partner – R&D and Business Development – Pharmaceuticals

Dechra logoWe’re on the lookout for a Finance Business Partner, to work alongside the R&D and Business Development team of our client Dechra Pharmaceuticals PLC at their Kansas City, Missouri facility.

This is an exceptional opportunity to take responsibility for all financial management aspects of the pipeline, including Product Development (PD), Regulatory Affairs (RA), and in-licensing [defined here as Business Development (BD)]

This will include the development of pipeline financial strategy, strategically influencing senior stakeholders within Finance, PD, RA and BD as well as challenging and supporting resource allocation to ensure proper prioritisation to deliver the pipeline. You will be responsible for maintaining and developing an effective financial control environment for the function.

Key Responsibilities

Finance partnering and decision support

  • Work closely with Project Leaders to support resource allocation and project prioritisation
  • Develop the business case and benefit realisation for project investments across portfolios
  • Work across multi-functional teams (i.e. PD, RA, Manufacturing, Sales and Marketing) to coordinate the product portfolio prioritisation and agree sales forecasts, costs and launch dates to establish projects’ return and attractiveness
  • Establish with senior stakeholders the business case and financial evaluation for potential in-licensing deals
  • Ensure sensitivities are modelled, assumptions identified and discussed
  • Be an active member of the PD, RA and BD leadership teams

Budget and forecasts

  • Group Headcount and OpEx Budgeting and forecasting
  • Review and challenge assumptions prior to submission to the CEO/CFO
  • Monitor performance against the plan and forecast
  • Prepare monthly/quarterly reports for project and regulatory spending
  • Provide analytics and reporting for monthly variance analysis, forecasting and quarterly business reviews (currently using Excel, Oracle in the future)


  • Review monthly financial close process and accruals
  • Consolidate the management accounts and submit in Group format
  • Ensure shared services operate efficiently and accurately
  • Ensure the accuracy and integrity of the accounting records and financial systems (currently done in 3 systems in Uldum, Denmark, Den Bosch, Netherlands and Kansas City, US)
  • Look to reduce numbers of legacy systems and improve processes by consolidating the Uldum and den Bosch systems
  • Prepare the calculations for the R&D tax claims (UK, US and NL)
  • Ensure adequate financial controls are in place for Finance processes, documented and applied
  • This will include applying Dechra’s capitalisation policy and rolling out an updated delegation of authority
  • Be the main point of contact for the external auditors for PD, RA and BD Finance related matters


  • Support the roll-out of Oracle and Hyperion Budgeting as needed
  • Provide support to the CFO on an ad-hoc basis, including evaluation of acquisitions and due diligence


Bachelor’s degree or MBA
Pharmaceutical experience in a hands-on industry/commercial role
Significant experience in financial, operational and business partnering roles
Excellent analytical and communication skills, both written and verbal with ability to respond under pressure and work issues across functions
Ability and drive to work independently
Experience of working in cross functional teams within a matrix environment desirable
Advanced proficiency with Excel and PowerPoint. Experience with Oracle and Hyperion Planning a ‘plus’
Demonstrated ability to create, maintain and interpret information in complex forecasting models
Strong interpersonal skills
